Birth of an AVA — Petaluma Gap: An Evening of Wine and Education

The Wine Library Associates of Sonoma County and the Petaluma Gap Winegrowers Alliance are proud to co-present “The Birth of an AVA – Petaluma Gap,” an evening of wine and education about the region and how it is pursuing American Viticultural Area (AVA) status from the federal government.
While the Petaluma area has grown fine wine grapes since the mid 19th century, it has in recent years given rise to wonderful wineries, making it a focal point of the area’s rich tourism industry. The evening will highlight the history of the region, the kinds of grapes being grown, viticultural practices, and the wines being made from the fruit of this region. The presentation will also include information on the petition being put together to get AVA status for the area. A tasting of wines from grapes grown in the region will also be included.
The event will take place on Friday, January 30, 2015, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Healdsburg Regional Library, 139 Piper Street, Healdsburg, CA, sponsored by the Wine Library Associates of Sonoma County.

Come join the North Bay Italian Cultural Foundation (NBICF) and the Wine Library Associates of Sonoma County (WLASC) for a fireside chat with the directors & producers of Finding the Mother Lode: Italian Immigrants in California!
An informative evening with guests Gianfranco & Suma talking about their latest film. Copies will be available for sale. A wine reception featuring Italian-American wineries from the film will be held during the event. Local breads and cheeses will complement the wines.

“Combining oral history with scholarly analysis this, the first documentary about the history of Italians in California, explores the multiracial nature of California and the Italians’ place in that racial landscape.” Dr. Paola Sensi-Isolani, Anthropologist, St. Mary’s College
Finding the Mother Lode documents the experience of Italian immigrants in California, which was markedly different from that of their compatriots elsewhere in the United States. Through stories set in seven Italian communities throughout California, this film examines how economic and social mobility became possible for many Italians in the Golden State. It is also a look at how immigrant identity is maintained and transformed as immigrants become assimilated into mainstream America. These immigrants found their ‘mother lode’ in farming, fishing, commerce and winemaking. To learn more about the film and film makers, visit their website www.findingthemotherlode.com. A few notable area winegrowers were interviewed in the film, including Jeff Collins (Cellar #8 at Asti Winery), Jim Pedroncelli (Pedroncelli Winery) and Peter & Ed Seghesio (Seghesio Winery). A wine reception will also be held featuring wines from these wineries during the chat.
