What is The New York Times - Remote Access

Courtesy of the California State Library, all California public libraries now have online access to The New York Times newspaper. This resource is available for access outside the library and has The New York Times regular newspaper content from 1851 to present.

How Do I get Started?

Remote access only: This access link will not work on library computers or Wi-Fi

  • Have your library card ready (Don't have one? No problem! Check out our eCard registration page)

  • Go to: NYT Remote

  • Register for an acct with an email address (sign in if you already have an account)

  • Create a password

  • You have checked out a 72-hour pass to access NYT (To renew your pass after 72 hours simply log into the above link again. Make sure to select the "Log in here" link to renew your access)

  • Log into the New York Times website or app and explore articles from 1851 to present.


  • All regular newspaper content (1851 - present)

  • Access 5 articles a day from content years spanning 1923-1980

  • All multimedia, including video, photography, VR features and all new multimedia to come

  • Spanish and Mandarin Chinese versions of

  • Personalized access, including e-mail newsletters such as California Today, mobile apps (excluding the Crossword app) for phones and tablets, with customizable newsfeed, and article recommendations based on topics you most commonly read about
