There’s More to the Story

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a library? Some people picture a big building full of books, magazines, maybe a few CDs and DVDs. Others recall visiting a library to get help with job hunting, researching a term paper or perusing college catalogs and travel guides.
Many think fondly of their library as the place that hosts story times for kids, and maybe a magician, puppet show or gardening class. Some know that the library hosts musical performances, emergency preparedness workshops, tax filing assistance, computer literacy classes, chess and yoga clubs, teen poetry slams and art shows.
They are all correct! A modern library is much more than a place to check out books, a quiet spot to read, or a place to gather. The branches and collections of the Sonoma County Library function as community hubs, providing free access to a world of knowledge, in person and online.
National Library Week, held this year from April 23-29, is an opportunity to celebrate an audacious and remarkable idea – that information and knowledge should be accessible to anyone, anytime, absolutely free.
The theme of National Library Week is “There’s More to the Story” and evidence of that theme is everywhere in your local libraries. From technology lending, to job skills workshops for teens, to activities that celebrate our diversity and creativity, we meet you where you need us.
Want to learn how to work that tablet your grandkids got you for your birthday? Come to the library and take part in a Tech Help session. Want to check out a toolbox with materials and instructions that help you weatherize your home? Come to the library and ask for a DIY Toolkit. Need high speed internet access for a school project? Come to the library and check out a WiFi hotspot.
We’re online for you as well, 24/7. Your library card unlocks software training, world language lessons, access to the mighty Britannica, streaming films and documentaries, family history databases, even Consumer Reports, the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times – all free with a Sonoma County Library card.
Libraries are for everyone. We welcome and celebrate you, regardless of your ethnicity, age, ability, gender identity, sexual orientation, or religious belief. In a time when there are attempts to suppress access to books featuring LGBTQIA+/BIPOC characters, your library will continue to amplify diverse voices and speak out for the right to read.

Celebra el Día de los Niños

La Biblioteca del Condado de Sonoma ofrece eventos y libros de regalo para celebrar el Día de los niños el 30 de abril.
Celebre la diversidad en nuestra comunidad con sus niños asistiendo a un evento para hacer libros o panfletos con su propio arte (zine-making) en la Biblioteca en honor al El día de los niños/ El día de los libros.
El día de los niños es una celebración para ellos, sus familias y la lectura que toma lugar cada año en abril. Las bibliotecas celebran este día a través de la nación enfatizando la importancia de la alfabetización para niñ@s de todas las culturas y sus lenguajes.
“La celebración del día de los niños es una expresión de el compromiso que tenemos a diario por conectar a l@s niños y sus familias con diversos libros, lenguajes y culturas. Me siento muy emocionada de ofrecer este programa a nuestras comunidades,” mencionó la directora de la Biblioteca del Condado de Sonoma, Erika Thibault.
Durante la última semana de abril, cada Biblioteca del Condado de Sonoma proveerá materiales a los niños (k-6) para que hagan su propio libro utilizando dibujos, collages y fotografías en los eventos de Mi Libro. Los cuidadores de los niños están invitados a colaborar creando sus propios libros. La Biblioteca también invita a los jóvenes (grados 7-12) a crear libros o panfletos con su propio arte (zine-making) en mini talleres de Zine. A través del arte y la alfabetización, los jóvenes tendrán un sentido de orgullo personal por sus propias creaciones.
“Crear un libro o panfleto personal les da a los niños la oportunidad de desarrollar habilidades de alfabetización temprana que les convertirá en lectores de por vida, y amantes de los libros,” mencionó la bibliotecaria de niños Michelle Santamaría.
En honor al Día de los niños el 30 de abril, cada biblioteca ofrecerá la oportunidad a los niños para elegir libros gratuitos conforme vayan solicitándolos y hasta agotar existencias. Esto apoyará la alfabetización por medio de crear bibliotecas en los hogares e incrementará el acceso a libros para niños en la comunidad.
Los eventos del Día de los niños se llevará a cabo en varias bibliotecas del 27 al 30 de abril, así que por favor revise el itinerario de eventos de Mi Libro y talleres Zine en línea para registrarse.

Celebrate Día de los Niños/Children's Day

Sonoma County Library Offers Events and Book Giveaways to Celebrate Día on April 30.
Celebrate the diversity of our community with your kids by attending a free book- or zine-making event at the library in honor of El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day), commonly known as Día.
Día is a celebration of children, families and reading that takes place every year in April. Libraries across the United States celebrate Día, emphasizing the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
“Celebrating Día is an expression of the library’s daily commitment to connecting children and families with diverse books, languages and cultures. I am thrilled to offer this program to our communities,” said Sonoma County Library Director Erika Thibault.
During the last week in April, every Sonoma County Library branch will provide materials for children (grades K-6) to make their own book using drawings, collage and photos at Mi Libro (My Book) events. Caregivers and children are welcome to collaborate to create their book. The library also invites teens (grades 7-12) to create their own zine at a Mini Zine Workshop. Through art and literacy, youth will feel a sense of pride and ownership when they complete their book or zine.
“Creating a book or zine of their very own gives kids the chance to develop early literacy skills that will make them lifelong readers and library lovers,” said Petaluma Children’s Librarian Michelle Santamaria.
In honor of Día on April 30, every library branch will offer children a choice from a limited selection of free children's books to take home and keep on a first-come, first-served basis. This supports literacy through building home libraries and increasing access to books for children in our community.
Día events will take place at many libraries from April 27-April 30, so check out the Mi Libro event schedule and Mini Zine Workshop schedule online to register.

In this workshop, you will learn how to make a pocket-sized zine out of just one piece of paper. Make one, make a million! Mini zines are the perfect way to showcase your ideas and manifestos, and are as easy to make as they are fun to share.
Hands-On Screen Printing Demo with Print | Organize | Protest
Come screen print t-shirts, posters, and signs of resistance & empowerment. We will provide designs from artists in the community and equipment for public use, YOU come and print them. Paper & fabric will be provided, participants are encouraged to bring clothing and other materials to print on.
Violet Dreams, Passionfruit Streams: Queering Utopia with Violet Alexis Bea
Violet will present a collaborative video produced by her friends at Kickback Theatre of a comic reading of some of her thesis pages. She will also present a few additional pages in a more traditional slideshow and read-out-loud format and talk about her work, inspiration, and thoughts around queering utopia. There will be time for questions and audience interaction.

Mes de la Historia de la Mujer

Marzo es el Mes Nacional de la Historia de la Mujer, un momento para rendir homenaje a las generaciones de mujeres que cambiaron el rostro de la sociedad a través del coraje y el activismo.
La Alianza Nacional de la Historia de la Mujer selecciona un tema anual para el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer. El tema para el 2023 es “Celebrando a las mujeres que cuentan nuestras historias.”
¿Sabía que el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer comenzó en el condado de Sonoma?
La Alianza Nacional de la Historia de la Mujer, se fundó en el condado de Sonoma. En 1978, el grupo de educacián de la Comisión del Condado de Sonoma sobre la Condición Jurídica y Social de la Mujer inició la primera celebración de la “Semana de la Historia de la Mujer.”
La celebración de una semana incluyó programas escolares, oradores, un concurso de ensayos, y un desfile en el centro de Santa Rosa. La imagen de arriba es del desfile de la Semana de la Historia de la Mujer de Santa Rosa en 1979. Varios grupos prominentes de mujeres al enterarse del éxito del programa del condado de Sonoma, comenzaron a mobilizarse para que la celebración sea a nivel nacional y, en 1980, el presidente Carter emitió una Proclamación Presidencial declarando la primera "Semana de la Historia de la Mujer" a principios de marzo de ese año. En 1987, el Congreso declaró marzo como el Mes Nacional de la Historia de la Mujer en perpetuidad.
La Biblioteca del Condado de Sonoma celebra el Mes Nacional de la Historia de la Mujer con eventos, exhibiciones, y recursos, como los que se destacan a continuación. Ayúdanos a compartir este tributo anual celebrando y aprendiendo sobre las generaciones de mujeres que influyeron y enriquecieron a nuestra nación y sociedad.

March is National Women's History Month, a time to pay tribute to the generations of women who changed the face of society through courage and activism.
The National Women’s History Alliance designates a yearly theme for Women’s History Month. The 2023 theme is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.”
Did you know that the Women’s History Month began in Sonoma County?
The National Women’s History Alliance, was founded in Sonoma County. In 1978, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women initiated the first-ever “Women's History Week” celebration.
The weeklong celebration included school programs, speakers, an essay contest, and a parade held in downtown Santa Rosa. The image above is from the 1979 Santa Rosa Women’s History Week parade. Hearing of the success of the Sonoma County program, several prominent women’s groups began lobbying for a national celebration — and in 1980, President Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring the first-ever “Women's History Week” in early March of that year. In 1987, Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month in perpetuity.
Sonoma County Library celebrates National Women’s History Month with events, displays, and resources, such as those highlighted below. Help us share in this annual tribute by celebrating and learning about the generations of women who influenced and enriched our nation and society.

Sonoma County Library Appoints New Director

Erika Thibault is the new director for the Sonoma County Library, which spans 12 regional libraries, two community libraries, a mobile library, and multiple special collections. The Sonoma County Library Commission voted to appoint Thibault at its February 1 meeting after a nationwide executive search.
“Erika is moving the Sonoma County Library into the future. We look forward to creating a 21st century library system that will make Sonoma County residents extremely proud,” said Deborah Doyle, Chair of the Library Commission.
Thibault has served as Interim Director since July 2022 when the previous director retired. Thibault was hired as Deputy Director in 2021 and came to Sonoma County from the Los Angeles Public Library where, as Western Area Manager, she coordinated programs and services for 12 branches.
Thibault is experienced in public library management, budgeting, strategic planning, collection development, and communications, and was a 2017 PLA Leadership Academy fellow. Since assuming the role of Interim Director, she has already achieved the library’s long-term goal of opening on Sundays, is leading discussions with the City of Santa Rosa about the new Roseland library and is working with other community partners.
Thibault has embraced the concepts of opportunity, equity, and resilience embodied in the library’s Reimagining Plan, and is a leader in the library’s ongoing work to provide equitable service to all in Sonoma County.
“I am honored and delighted to lead the Sonoma County Library as Director. Sonoma County is a vibrant and diverse place, and I am looking forward to building relationships with of our county and municipal partners to provide innovative, community-responsive programs and services to help our communities thrive for generations to come,” said Thibault.
Erika Thibault es la nueva directora de la Biblioteca del Condado de Sonoma, que se expande a 12 bibliotecas regionales, dos bibliotecas comunitarias, una biblioteca móvil y múltiples colecciones especiales. La Comisión de Bibliotecas del Condado de Sonoma votó para nombrar a Thibault en su reunión del 1 de febrero después de una búsqueda de ejecutivos a nivel nacional.
“Erika está impulsando la Biblioteca del Condado de Sonoma hacia el futuro. Esperamos crear una sistema de bibliotecas del siglo veintiuno que hará muy orgullosos a los residentes del condado de Sonoma”, dijo Deborah Doyle, presidenta de la Comisión de Bibliotecas.
Thibault se ha desempeñado como directora interina desde julio de 2022 cuando la directora anterior se retiró.
